Armed with nine enormous 18.1 inch battery guns capable of firing 3,200 pound armor piercing shells, the two 65,000 ton vessels in this class were built in extreme secrecy and spent much of their military careers in naval bases, deploying only a few times to counter American raids. They were also the most well-armed, each one carrying a naval artillery surpassing that of any other warship.
